Federation Membership

The club is a member of the Surrey Photographic Association and also a member of the Southern Counties Photographic Federation.

Through these regional Federation memberships, the club is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB).

If you check the external site links throughout this page, you will find these external bodies typically have newsletters you can read from their respective sites or else subscribe to via e-mail.

The Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) comprises some 52 clubs and societies throughout Surrey, West Sussex and the SW London Boroughs.
The SPA is one of the 15 member Federations of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). The SPA is managed by a committee which is elected annually at the AGM in November. The SPA holds several annual competitions – both for member clubs, and also at individual level for members of the SPA’s member clubs.

The SPA also has a Facebook page at:

The judges for WCCC PDI and Print competitions are selected from the roster of the SPA. When we complete the judge assessment questionnaires, those are returned to the SPA in order to provide feedback to the judges themselves and thereby improve the judging process. The questions we complete are those set by the SPA.

Contact the WCCC Club Secretary for general information, the WCCC External Competition Secretary for information related to SPA-organised competitions, and the WCCC Internal Competition Secretary for SPA judge-related matters.

The Southern Counties Photographic Federation (SCPF) serves around 65 camera clubs and photographic societies in Hampshire and neighbouring parts of Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Wiltshire and Dorset, the Isle of Wight, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey.

The SCPF is also one of the 15 Member Federations of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) and is also affiliated to FIAP.

The SCPF has a Facebook page at:

WCCC is a member of both SPA and SCPF for geographic reasons (a number of our members are from outside Surrey, and a number of our neighbouring clubs against who we have friendly competitions are members of the SCPF), as well as operational/historical reasons to do with PAGB-insurance. We also continue to be a member of both as that gives us access to both for judges and speakers. In terms of competing at Fed and InterFed level, then we compete via SPA.

The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) is the national umbrella body for all photographic clubs and societies in the UK.
Both the Surrey Photographic Association and the Southern Counties Photographic Federations are amongst the 15 member Federations of the PAGB in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each Federation nominates a member to sit on the national PAGB executive.
The PAGB organises a number of annual competitions for federations and clubs – The InterFed Print and PDI Competitions, the InterClub Print and PDI Championships and the GB CUP Competition for all affiliated clubs. As a member club of the SPA – note that it is the club that belongs to the SPA, not its individual members – your club is affiliated to the PAGB and our clubs and their members are eligible to participate in PAGB events and take advantage of all the other services the PAGB offers. These include the Awards for Photographic Merit – CPAGB, DPAGB & MPAGB, and Patronage for major events such as exhibitions and salons. The PAGB also offers access to club and personal liability insurance at competitive rates. The PAGB Handbook which is published every two years contains full details as well as listings of all Federations, Judges and Lecturers etc.

The PAGB has strong links with similar organisations in different countries throughout the world through its membership of FIAP (Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique / The International Federation of Photographic Art). (Through FIAP, further distinctions are available).

WCCC receives the Alliance Handbook which lists the various services available and gives the names and addresses of judges and lecturers for all the Federations, these being available to every club. The handbook also lists the principal officers of each Federation.

The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) is an Educational Charity promoting both the art and science of photography. As it is for individuals, WCCC is not a member of RPS, though several club members are also members of RPS. The RPS offers various distinctions such as Licentiateship (LRPS), Associateship (ARPS), and Fellowship (FRPS).

A number of WCCC club members are active members in the RPS Thames Valley Digital Imaging Group (TVDig):

The British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE) organises various Exhibitions (including one run by Basingstoke Camera Club) where individuals can enter images. The BPE also has its own Crown Award merit system (BPE1*, BPE2*, BPE3*, BPE4*, BPE5*).

Other unofficial communities

As would be expected the world of on-line photography and social media is bringing many new virtual communities where you can connect with like-minded photographers. These groups are often international with members all around the globe (common language is fortunately English though). These groups are also often much more specialised by genre or post-processing style.
There are communities on facebook, Flickr, and Google+. Google+ especially has many photo-communities where you can seek inspiration, gain advice, and – if you wish – share your own images.

UK relevant groups I (= Mark W) have found on facebook are (facebook account and membership needed):

I am also a member of groups for London photography, and follow several notable international photographers on facebook, Google+, as well on-line photo-communities such as 500px, 1x, and Flickr. If you are into more convenience photography, then there is Instagram, as well as pinterest.
